Public transport, bicycle and car Directions
The Department of History is located in the heart of Heidelberg's Old Town at the foot of Heidelberg Castle. The main entrance is in the pedestrian zone. There are good connections to public transport and the railway network via the ‘Heidelberg Altstadt’ station. The closest bus stop to the seminar is ‘Universitätsplatz’, coming from the Neckar Valley you can get off at the bus stop ‘Peterskirche’. However, we do not recommend travelling directly by car. There are no free car parks in the immediate vicinity of the Department of History. There are two disabled parking spaces directly in front of the entrance to the Historical Seminar. The best way to get around Heidelberg and the labyrinthine Old Town is by bicycle. Please allow extra time for the Heidelberg Christmas Market.

Arriving by public transport
From the railway station to the Historical Seminar
Heidelberg railway station is located approx. 2 km from the Historical Seminar on the western edge of the city. The bus stop in the direction of the Old Town is north of the station. You can reach the bus stop by leaving the railway station straight ahead. From there the buses go directly to Universitätsplatz. From Universitätsplatz it is about 100 metres south along Grabengasse to the entrance of the Historical Seminar opposite the University Library.
Another option: Take the (suburban) train to the station ‘Heidelberg-Altstadt’ (Karlstor-Bahnhof). From there, walk through Karlstor and along Hauptstrasse to Universitätsplatz. Then turn left into Grabengasse and the Department of History (approx. 800m).
The central public transport hub in Heidelberg's Old Town is Bismarckplatz at the eastern end of Hauptstraße. There is no tram connection from there to the east into the Old Town. You will have to change to the bus. The nearest bus stop to the seminar is ‘Universitätsplatz’. From Universitätsplatz it is about 100 metres south to the entrance of the Historical Seminar opposite the University Library. Those travelling from the Neckar Valley can get off at the bus stop ‘Peterskirche’. St Peter's Church is opposite the University Library. The Department of History is on the right-hand side of Grabengasse next to the University Library.

Car parks
The multi-storey car park ‘P11’ is located directly next to the Department of History under the University Library. Unfortunately, this car park is already fully occupied in the mornings. Therefore, please use the multi-storey car park ‘P9’, which has an exit to Plöck. Information on occupancy, prices and alternative car parks/spaces can be found in the car park guidance system of the city of Heidelberg
Disabled parking spaces
There are two disabled parking spaces directly in front of the Department of History building. The multi-storey car park P9 also offers disabled parking spaces at ground level.
Coming from the A5 motorway
Karlsruhe-Frankfurt
Leave the A5 motorway at the Heidelberg junction. Take the A656 motorway in the direction of Heidelberg. Stay on the A659 until you reach the Heidelberg city sign. Take the next exit on the right (‘Altstadt, Schloß’). Leave the railway station on your right. Stay on the two-lane road in the direction of the city centre (Kurfürstenanlage). After approx. 1km the road leads into Adenauerplatz. Get into the right-hand lane and drive straight on into the Gaisberg tunnel. Approx. 150m after the tunnel you can turn left into car park P9. Parking spaces are usually free there, even at peak times. To reach car park P13 directly opposite the Historical Seminar, continue for approx. 200m on the two-lane road. Turn left just before the next tunnel. The entrance to multi-storey car park P13 is to the left of the entrance to the University Library.
From car park P9 to the Department
Leave the car park P9 towards the city centre/Plöck. The University Library is located at the eastern end of Plöck. Opposite the University Library is the Department of History.
