History of the Department
History was first taught in Heidelberg by the famous Dutch philologist Janus Gruterus († 1627) as professor ordinarius historiarum; the subject was later taught by professors of rhetoric, philology and church history. The university only received a chair for history after its reorganisation in 1807. Historical university registers, yearbooks, lecture notes, qualification documents and much more can be found in the digitised university history holdings of the university library.
Library
The library of the Department of History and the Institute of Franconian and Palatinate History not only offers an extensive collection of books, but also provides an attractive space for research and reading. The source room on the 2nd floor is a particular gem. Our holdings are also listed in the online catalogue of the University Library. Heidelberg University Publishing is an open access publisher for quality-checked academic publications that are made available for download free of charge and open access.
