Opening hours of the Department of History & the library during the ‘Christmas holidays’
During the semester break over the turn of the year 2025/2026, the Department of History will be open or closed as follows:
From Monday, 22 December 2025, up to Tuesday, 6 January 2026, the seminar and library will be closed.
From Wednesday, 7 January 2026, the regular opening hours of the lecture period will apply again.

Library profile
The library of the Department of History at Heidelberg University is part of the Departmental Library of History and Cultural Studies. It is a reference library with lending possibilities (overnight or week-end loans) for students of the department. It mainly contains works on European medieval and modern history and currently comprises around 90,000 volumes (including journals) and 114 ‘current’ journal titles (as of November 2025). The library's holdings are fully recorded in the Heidelberg University Library's online catalogue HEIDI.
The library of the Institute for Franconian and Palatinate History (approx. 21,000 volumes, 54 current journals) and the Schurman Library for American History (approx. 10,000 volumes, 1 current journal) are located in the same building as the library of the Department of History. The holdings of these libraries are also fully recorded in the Heidelberg University Library's online catalogue HEIDI.
