Prof. Dr. Stefanie Gänger Modern History
Welcome to the website of the Chair of Modern History.
The Chair of Modern History stands for a cultural and social history of the “long 19th century”—the period spanning from the late 1700s to the early 1900s. Its regional focus lies on the Atlantic and Pacific worlds, particularly Western European societies and their (former) imperial possessions. It stands for a geographically expansive ‘global’ history, with an emphasis on relations within and between different parts of the world. Thematically, the team’s interest – from the pre-doctoral to the professorial level – centres on the history of science and knowledge, environmental and material history, and the history of disease and the body.
