Prof. Dr. Silke Mende Contemporary history

The Chair of Contemporary History addresses the period from the end of World War II to the present day in its research and teaching. At the same time, it places this period in the context of longer historical processes, thereby also engaging with the “long twentieth century” from a broader perspective. In addition to German history, the regional focus includes French, British, and Italian history. At the core is contemporary European history understood as entangled history, which embeds themes of German and Western European history in international and global contexts. Particular attention is paid to the (post-)colonial dimensions of European societies.
