Courses at the Department of History for external and international students As a guest at the Department of History

Registration for courses

The courses offered by the Department of History are generally open to both fellow students of other subjects and international students who are spending their semester abroad in Heidelberg.

The courses are publicised via the campus management system heiCO. There is also the course catalogue ‘VVZ Geschichte’ with notes on studying at the Department of History.

There are a few things worth noting:

  • The language of instruction is usually German. There is a corresponding note in the detailed view of the course on heiCO. In general, you can assume that the course will be held in English if the description text in heiCO is written in English.
  • Some course types, such as the three introductory lectures and the source analysis exercises, are reserved for history students, including international students who are in Heidelberg via the history programme. We ask fellow students of other subjects to attend other lectures as an alternative.
  • Please note that the methods of registration for the course before the start of the lecture period vary from course to course. Information on this can be found under ‘Participation criteria & registration’ in the detailed overview.
  • The number of ECTS credits to be earned and the work expected of you in the course are based on the module handbook for the History degree programme. For example, a lecture is worth 4 ECTS credits with an examination at the end of the lecture period (oral or written examination) and 2 ECTS credits for regular attendance.

Registering courses for examination

Examination registration via heiCO takes place at the Department of History in December/January (winter semester) and June/July (summer semester). Information on this can be found on the homepage of the Department of History. Students who are not enrolled in History usually register for the examination online via ‘free registration’. Please note the different examination results and corresponding credit points. You can research these for the corresponding course type in the module handbooks of the B.A. and M.A. History programmes. We ask for your understanding that only the examination achievements/credit points specified in the module handbooks will be awarded. Individual arrangements for the acquisition of a different number of credit points are generally not possible. If you have any questions about credit transfer, please contact the academic advisor for your subject.

The credit points earned are recorded in heiCO by the lecturers. These are listed in heiCO under ‘My achievements’ and can be recognised in your own subject by the academic advisor. For Erasmus incoming students, this can be done by the subject-specific advising service of the Department of History on request.
