IT Team of the Department of History (HistAdmin)

Tasks

The IT team at the Department of History is responsible for setting up and servicing the desktop computers and laptops, as well as the PC pools, projectors and other equipment used in teaching. The team also manages the intranet on Sharepoint and sets up courses on Moodle for colleagues at the Department of History. We are happy to advise on the selection of suitable software and hardware. Purchases are made via the IT department. The team is coordinated by Dr Kilian Schultes.

Accounts, authorizations on the server and email addresses are assigned by the ZEGK's IT representative, Maximilian Grieser.

Contact information

The IT office of the Department of History is located on the third floor of the Department of History: Office no. 301. The office is not always staffed. The office hours of the student assistants of the IT team during the lecture period can be found on the intranet on Sharepoint.

The telephone number is: +49 6221 54

The easiest way to contact us is by email. Via the functional address histadmin@zegk.uni-heidelberg.de you can reach the entire team.

„Uni-ID“

Heidelberg University's central user identification system for students, employees and university members is the “Uni-ID”. It is assigned by the Heidelberg University Computing Center (URZ) upon enrolment or employment contract. At the Department of History, everyone needs the Uni-ID to log in to the e-learning platform Moodle, the intranet on Sharepoint, the campus management heiCO, the cloud storage heiBOX (Seafile) and to use the laptops and desktop computers. Furthermore, since 2024 for the use of the Cisco VPN client (anyconnect), which in turn, together with multi-factor authentication, makes it possible to access Moodle and Sharepoint in the first place.

If you have any questions about Uni-ID, please contact the University computing center. The IT team of the Department of History cannot reset the Uni-ID passwords. The assignment is made to the colleagues employed at the department via the contract. The URZ has written a useful summary of what happens if you de-register or your employment contract expires: Deactivation of the Uni-ID.

The URZ itself is located in Neuenheimer Feld. However, there is an “IT Service Point” in the old town opposite the Department of History in the University Administration in the “Carolinum”. Please note the office hours, which are linked on the right under “IT Service”. It is also convenient to contact us via video call. Please remember to have an ID ready if you have any questions about your accounts.

Email & Messaging

Students at Heidelberg University receive an email account on SOGo with their Uni-ID. Research assistants and members of the History Department with a contract can have an Exchange account created on the university's own server via the IT officer, which enables personal and group-based emails, appointments, tasks, contacts and much more on all platforms (desktop/mobile).

The Department of History strongly recommends that you set up a personal digital signature (S/MIME) free of charge to secure your official correspondence. You can apply for S/MIME certificates for e-mail communication via the URZ.

With “heiCHAT”, the URZ also offers a messaging service that uses the open-source Matrix communication protocol and is recommended as an alternative to WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, etc. The data is stored in encrypted form on university servers. Login is via the Uni-ID.
